"HANNA'S HEROES"
The Hanna Holliday Fund
Why Care Packages?
When we had to take Hanna to the Hospital, we did not know what was wrong. We only knew that her blood count was not right. We spent the next two weeks in the hospital. Nothing can prepare a parent for the news that your child has cancer. We were overwhelmed to say the least. There were so many little things we needed but did not have until we both could clear our heads and go out and get them. We were fortunate to have some very good friends who gave us the means to purchase things we needed. Most families we have talked with have very similar stories. This is where the idea for "Hanna's Heroes" originated. We have found that people want to help, and as you see your child laying helpless to this disease and there is nothing you can do, you feel helpless as well. So we have started this site to have a way of helping. It allows us to feel like we are doing something to help Hanna and other families in the same situation.
What Is In A Care Package?
Inflatable bed: We realized that we both needed to get rest. The hospital is not a great place to do this. But
as parents they need rest to deal with their children during this time of crisis.
Notebook: As doctors told us the diagnosis and treatments, we would write things down on everything
from business cards to back of receipts we had in our pockets. The note book will come with
cards attached that give definitions of a variety of medical terms. It will also have contact
information to websites and social service agencies.
Toy: When you go to the hospital the last thing you take is something to help occupy your child's
time. We will have toys or other form of entertainment for ages 0-18!
Toiletries: The last thing to be thinking about is your breath as a doctor is telling you about your
child's condition! So we will have toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine products,
shampoos and a real bar of soap.
Miscellaneous: There are things that you forget even when you mean to pick them up when you are finally
able to go out. Such as: a disposable camera, a roll of quarters for vending machines,
calling card, fuel card, tissues, and a compact laundry basket.
Who Qualifies?
Anyone who's child has been diagnosed with cancer. There are no other qualifications to meet. This is a one time gift to a family who just found out their child has cancer. We will not contact them and there are no forms to fill out. Referrals can come from the hospitals, friends, nurses or doctors. All the family has to do is accept the gift!
What If The Family Doesn't Need Everything Given to Them?
When a family recieves a Care Package they will be instructed that if there are any items they do not need to please return them to "Hanna's Heroes". If there are other items the family may need at the time, "Hanna's Heroes" will assist the family as much as possible to add these items.
Will Cash Be Given To A Family?
The only cash given to a family receiving a "Hanna's Heroes" Care Package will be one roll of quarters for use in a vending machine. No other cash will be given out. If the family has a need and "Hanna's Heroes" is financially able to help them, we will then assist the family with that need.
Can I Donate Items Instead of Cash?
Yes! All donated items will be greatly appreciated. Just remember all items must be new and any packaging must not be broken. No used items or damaged items will be used.
How Do I Contribute?
It is estimated that 360 children will be diagnosed with cancer in the state of North Carolina. If we can find 220 people to donate $5 per week, we can give every newly diagnosed patient a care package!
You can make a charitable contribution through this website or you can fill out the form located under the "Contact Us" tab and reply in the comments section what you are willing to contribute. Remember we are at the infant stages of "Hanna's Heroes" and need businesses willing to be a drop off point for these contributions.
What Does A Care Package Cost the Familes?
The family that receives a "Hanna's Heroes" Care Package pays absolutely nothing at any time. The cost associated to create a care package is approximately $150.00, which will be paid for by donations that we collect through this site.
